Running Accomplishments:

Fairly new to running (2 1/2 years).  Hobble Creek 1/2 marathon PR 1:38 and something (2007).  Provo River Trail 1/2 marathon PR 1:41:33 (2007).  First marathon (St. George) 3:39:09.

Short-Term Running Goals:

Qualify for Boston Marathon at St. George Marathon (2008). I'd like to complete a Utah "Grand Slam," too.   Improve overall speed and endurance now and in the future.

Long-Term Running Goals:

Improve speed and endurance.

Personal:

I'm a 46 year old male.  I'm married with 7 children and 1 grandchild.  I am 6' 1'' tall and 180 lbs.  (I wish I were about 20 lbs lighter for running purposes, but realistically, I think I've lost about as much weight as I can.)

I started running primarily to lose weight (I've succeeded in losing 35 lbs over the last 2 years), but now running has become a part of me.  I can't say I'm in love with the sport (i.e., I don't eat, drink, sleep it), but I enjoy the sport, and I really do want to improve.

I'd love to be able to drop 8 to 10 mins. off my marathon time (so I can qualify for Boston).

My biggest running issue is "failing to finish strong" and coming up short.  For example, I'm OK through the first 8 to maybe 10 miles of a 1/2 marathon, but then I find it hard to motivate myself to push through the discomfort and fatigue of the last 2 to 4 miles.  I tend to start off too fast and then fatigue sets in about mile 8 and end up running "positive" splits. However, the concern is that if I slow up at the beginning to save more for the 2nd half, I'll still end up running about the same overall times (I'll just feel a little better perhaps at the end of the race).  I really need to improve endurance.

Currently, I do hill runs and speed workouts.  I've been doing these more diligently this year than last year, but I'm questioning whether I'm seeing any vast improvements this year over last (as evidenced by the 30+ seconds I seemed to lose over last year's Provo River Trail 1/2 marathon time).

I woke up about 4:45 AM to get ready for my long run today.  I seemed to feel a bit better.  I ate a bowl of oatmeal before my run.

I started off running @ 7:14 - 7:30 pace and managed to maintain that for the first 8 - 9 miles.  After that point, I started not feeling very well again, but kept pushing to get the miles.

I ran the last half of today's run at about 8:30 - 8:50 pace.

I'm definitely finished with running for the week. :)  I need to rest to try to get over this illness.

I came home from work today about 6:00 pm.  I was running a slight fever, and I wasn't feeling very well generally.  I took a hot shower, took 3 Advil, and went to bed.  I'm hopeful I'll feel better tomorrow morning for my 18 miler.

I ran 7 miles this morning, beginning about 6:00 AM in North Highland / Alpine area.  I ran with two other members of our informal running group.  We tried to keep a slightly faster pace, so I guess you could say it was more of a tempo run.  We ended up with an overall pace of about 8:05 / mile.  We also ended up running about 2 miles of hills.

I ran 4 fairly easy "recovery" miles today at midday during work.  Outside temperature turned out to be a little warmer than originally anticipated (it was about 94+ degrees), but I ran anyway.  It wasn't the most comfortable run, but the short mileage made it bearable.

I ran City Creek Canyon this evening after work with a group of friends.  We warmed up by running one mile down the canyon (starting from the gate and heading south) and then we ran back up to the gate.  We took a quick water break and then ran 4 miles up the canyon and 4 miles back down.  On the way down we ran 1 mile tempos (2).  My pace was about 6:45.  I felt pretty good, but clearly it was a work out.

I did 6.6 total miles today.  We did 4 x 1 mile repeats for speed workout and jogged / ran in between.  I averaged just under 7:00 minute miles for all 4 miles (between 6:45 and 7:00).  I tried to do better at "negative splitting" each mile.  I'd start off slower (probably 7:15 to7:30 pace) for the first half and then really pick it up for the second half.
